THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EXTERIOR MOULDING MATERIALS

Posted by DAVIDE ATERNINO on

Deciding which type of exterior mouldings are the right fit for your project can be overwhelming considering the market options that are available.

We're not shy in naming those alternatives because each have their own strengths.

MDF, while a popular choice for ease of availability, should never be used outdoors or in an application where it's exposed to water. MDF is made of wood fibres which are further refined into residuals. Since it's foundation is essentially wood, an organic material, they would de-compose rather quickly. Constant maintenance and eventual replacement are inevitable.

The most common though of exterior moulding materials is wood. It's preferred for its natural look and feel. While much stronger than MDF, it still requires regular upkeep and will eventually break down as well. Wood needs to breathe and the minute it's painted, that need vanishes which leads to cracking, splitting and rotting. Replacement as well is also inevitable though it's a longer process than MDF. Another thing to keep in mind is that high quality wood products are becoming more scarce in the marketplace which is driving up prices.

Pre-cast mouldings are used in many higher end projects. Not only are they elegant, but they stand the test of time with its high durability. They're versatile and suited for many applications. If time and budget allow, pre-cast mouldings are a great option. The drawbacks of pre-cast include long delivery times since a mold is required and production capability is limited. Transport is also a consideration and does come with a higher cost. And finally, when it comes to installation, more labour and special equipment is needed strictly because of how heavy each individual profile weighs.
